چکیده

This paper reports results of in-house experimentation on heat treatment and mechanical testing of H13 tool steel. Heat treatment strategy practiced by the industry is described in detail. Effect of various types of heat treatment on fracture toughness, hardness and other mechanical properties is also analyzed. It was found that toughness (expressed in terms of plane-strain fracture toughness KIC or Charpy impact energy CVN) and hardness (HRC) of H13 steel vary in a nonlinearly manner against tempering temperature. Toughness shows a decreasing-increasing trend, while hardness exhibits an opposite increasing-decreasing pattern with increasing temper temperature. Optimum heat treatment strategy for commercial aluminum extrusion dies (H13 steel) appears to be tempering in the 525-550oC temperature range, to get the best combination of high toughness and high hardness.

Effect of buffer layer and electrode composition on the mechanical properties of H13 steel repair welds using shielded metal arc welding

The present study investigated the effect of electrode composition and buffer layer on the microstructure and mechanical properties of H13 tool steel repair welds. Three specimens were welded applying two conditions; i.e. with and without stainless steel underlay. The microstructure of all weld metals contained the martensitic matrix with distributed chromium carbide precipitations. The microst...

Investigating the Effect of the Deep Cryogenic Heat Treatment on the Mechanical Properties and Corrosion Behavior of 1.2080 Tool Steel

Deep cryogenic heat treatment is assumed as a supplementary heat treatment performed on steels before the final tempering treatment to enhance the wear resistance and hardness of the steels. In this study, the effects of the deep cryogenic heat treatment on the wear behavior and corrosion resistance of the 1.2080 tool steel were studied using the wear testing machine and polarization and impeda...

The Influence of Heat-Input on Structural and Mechanical Properties of 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel

The influence of heat-input and pre-heat treatment on the structure, mechanical and corrosion behaviors of 2205 duplex stainless steel joint by means of GMAW process was the goal of this study. In this regards, the welding process was done using different heat input in the range of 0.6 to 1.4 kJ/mm and different pre-heating treatments in the range of 25 to 100 oC. The microstructural properties...

The Effect of Two-stage Heat Treatment Temperatures on Initial and FSSWed Properties of TRIP Steels

In this paper, a 0.2 C–1.6 Mn–1.5 Si wt. % TRIP-aided cold-rolled steel sheet was fabricated and the optimal heat treatment conditions (Intercritical Annealing “IA” and Bainitic Isothermal Transformation “BIT”) were investigated to maximize the volume fraction and stability of the retained austenite. The effects of temperature on IA (770, 790 and 810 ºC) and BIT (330, 350 and 370 <su...
